STRONG AND COURAGEOUS

by Ousus

Introduction
– Have you ever felt weak and discouraged?
– These are common human emotions.
– We all go through them from time to time.
– Even the great men of the Bible were faced with this.
– But in these situations God was faithful.
– God can be relied upon.
– However, He calls for us to be strong.

1. AN EXAMPLE FROM THE BIBLE
– In the book of Joshua we see an example of this.
– Here we see Joshua, a man chosen by God.
– He has one of the greatest tasks in history.
– To take the Jewish nation into the promised land.
– But he was fearful, discouraged and full of doubt.
– Sometimes we are a bit like that.
– But God encouraged Joshua all the time to be strong and courageous.

2. HOW GOD ENCOURAGED JOSHUA

– i. God encouraged Joshua by His presence.
– ii. God encouraged Joshua by His instructions to Joshua to be strong and courageous.
– God encourages Joshua in this way on 3 occasions.
Joshua 1:6 Be strong and courageous.
Joshua 1:7 Be strong and very courageous.
Joshua 1:9 Be strong an courageous.

– Perhaps God is wanting to encourage you in the same way, today.

3. WITH GOD WE ARE STRONG
– When God is with us we can be strong.
– If God is not with us we have a reason to be weak.
– God promised Joshua His presence.
Joshua 1:5 As I was with Moses, so I will be with you; I will never leave you nor forsake you.
– We can know that God is with us.
– This should be a source of great strength.

4. WHAT DOES IT MEAN TO BE STRONG?

– It is the ability to resist and stand firm.
– Resist what?
– Fear
– Discouragement
– Dismay
– Doubt
– AND stand firm.
– Hold our ground.
– Being in a place of confident assurance in God.

5. WHAT DOES IT MEAN TO HAVE COURAGE?

– The main aspect of courage is being BOLD and FEARLESS.
– It can be compared to words like: Daring, Adventurous (stepping out), Stouthearted, and Brave.
– God wants us to be courageous.
Joshua 1:9 “Be strong and of good courage; do not be afraid, nor be dismayed, for the Lord your God is with you wherever you go.” NKJ
– If He is with us we can.
– This is the key.
– His presence.
– Without it we are powerless.

6. WE ARE ENCOURAGED TO BE STRONG AND COURAGEOUS.

– Just as God encouraged Joshua to be strong and courageous so He wants to do the same for each of us.
Joshua 1:9 “Be strong and courageous. Do not be terrified; do not be discouraged, for the Lord your God will be with you wherever you go.” NIV
Joshua 1:9 “Be strong and of good courage; do not be afraid, nor be dismayed, for the Lord your God is with you wherever you go.” NKJ
Joshua 1:9 “Yes, be bold and strong! Banish fear and doubt! For remember, the Lord your God is with you wherever you go.” LIVING
– Today you and I are being encouraged to be strong just as Joshua was encouraged to be strong.

7. THE NATURE OF DISMAY
– Dismay is something that powerfully influences people.
Joshua 1:9 “Be strong and of good courage; do not be afraid, nor be dismayed, for the Lord your God is with you wherever you go.” NKJ
– What is this dismay?
– Dismay is another word for discouragement.
– The dictionary calls it horrified amazement.
– It is when we become disheartened and fearful.
– It becomes a reality when people lose hope.
– We are encouraged not to be dismayed.

8. GOD IS WITH YOU.
– This is a great joy.
– That God can be with us.
– For this very reason we don’t need to get discouraged.
Joshua 1:9 The Lord your God is with you.
Joshua 1:5 I will never leave you nor forsake you.

– It is for this reason that we are strong.
– This is the fact and this is the foundation.
– Because of this we can be strong and courageous.
– Because we can resist fear, discouragement, hopelessness and dismay.
– God is with us.
– Be strong!
